Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda has explained why now is the right time for the recording of the hit musical to arrive on streaming service Disney+.
Speaking during an introduction to the Disney+ version of the show alongside director Thomas Kail, Miranda said that the global lockdown caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which has closed theatres for many months, has made now the right time to bring the musical to a wider audience.
“We’re at a time when we can’t gather,” he said. “Because we can’t perform Hamilton live right now, the fact that we are able to provide this extraordinary film in its stead, it’s a real privilege.”
Kail added that it “felt really important for us to try to give this story, which we were so proud of, that felt like it was about all of us, to as many people as we could”.
The pair also spoke about their pride in the show, which has won 11 Tony Awards as well as a Grammy Award and a Pulitzer Prize.
“I’m proudest of Hamilton because of the opportunities it’s given so many other folks. So much of what Hamilton is about is how history remembers and how that changes over time,” Miranda said. “I think it takes on a different meaning when you see Black and Brown performers telling the origin story of our country.”
Thomas added that he is “proud” of Hamilton “because I feel like we made something that spoke to the moment when we made it and also can speak to the moment now”.
This recording of the stage show, which features the original cast shortly before they left the production in 2016, might well be the closest we ever get to an actual Hamilton movie because Miranda recently said that he doesn’t think he’ll ever turn the show into a film like he has done with In the Heights.
“I don’t love a lot of movie musicals based on shows because it’s hard to stick the landing,” he said. “I don’t know what a cinematic version of Hamilton looks like. If I had, I’d have written it as a movie.”
Hamilton arrives on Disney+ on Friday, July 3.
