Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is set to dash Celtic’s hopes of re-signing Fraser Forster by giving him a chance to resurrect his career at St Mary’s.

Forster is wanted back at the Scottish champions for another loan but the 32-year-old will be given a chance to compete with Alex McCarthy and Angus Gunn to be No1 for Hasenhuttl next season.

He is set to start the 2020/21 pre-season with his parent club where Hasenhuttl will assess whether he will stay, rather than spend a second campaign elsewhere on loan.

According to sources at Celtic, they are “no longer confident about getting him back” to sign for a fourth time in his career, as Southampton want to look at him for next season.

Celtic have looked at Joe Hart as an alternative should they fail to land Forster.  Burnley did not extend Hart’s deal at Turf Moor and his two-year spell at the club has come to an end, meaning he can move without a fee.

Forster was competing with Hart for the England No1 jersey before they were both overtaken. He first arrived at Celtic on loan from Newcastle in 2010 before he signed a permanent deal.

He was brought back at the start of the season, five years after his £10million deal to head to St Mary’s.

Hasenhuttl will assess goalkeepers at the end of the season, with McCarthy guilty of an error against Arsenal which led to a goal. Gunn started the campaign as first choice but lost his place in October.

Forster had headed to Celtic on a season-long loan, winning the title in Scotland, but cannot train at Southampton following his return due to restrictions on Covid-19 testing being limited to those involved in games.  He played 39 games for the club before returning back.
